3 reasons for you to adopt instead of buying
Pet animals are great companions that help entertain children and become true family members. After deciding to keep an animal at home, how about considering adoption? It’s important to look for an animal that fits the characteristics of the house and the living space.
But before buying an animal, have you thought about adopting?
Some organizations specialized in animal protection provide rescue and adoption services for animals at risk. These agencies help dogs and cats find new homes after they are collected, spayed or neutered, and vaccinated as needed.
“Adoption is an act of unconditional love. People who want to make a difference in these animals’ lives contribute by providing a safe home for them,” says Claudia Demarchi, director of the NGO Clube dos Vira-Latas (Mutt Club). SDR (mixed breed) is resilient, very friendly, and of good temperament.
To embrace the cause, we list three other reasons why you should adopt an animal:
- Animals are not brands
Instead of spending money on a specific breed, think about how much you would gain in return from a common dog? According to Vanice Orlandi, president of the International Union for the Protection of Animals (UIPA), adopted animals are very grateful and feel kinder towards their mentors. “They are dogs and cats that need a home, and it makes no sense to encourage biological trade when there are so many in need of homes.”
Vanice also emphasizes that by buying a puppy, the animal has an incentive to breed. “Sometimes people keep dogs just to sell puppies. There are people who lie about their breed to make more sales,” she revealed.
- Reduce the number of stray animals
Animal adoption has helped reduce the number of abandoned dogs and cats, estimated to be 30 million in Brazil, according to the World Health Organization. In large cities, it is estimated that there is one abandoned dog for every five residents.
“Today, the relationship between humans and animals is changing; they are part of our family. So adoption becomes a way to help these needy animals,” says Claudia Demarchi.
- Advantage in terms of adaptation
Before allowing adoption, the NGO seeks to obtain a profile of the family wishing to adopt the animal. “There are questionnaires that analyze the profile of the adopter, and this person commits to adhering to these standards. In general, we seek to encourage the adoption of animals that fit the characteristics of the family,” said Vanice.
Since animals available for adoption are usually adults, they can feel their temperament and know how they will interact with each family member. “In the case of a puppy, it will still develop its own characteristics and may not adapt. It will also bring more work for the family, which will have to bear some of the veterinary costs in the early months of the animal’s life,” the director emphasized.
