What is the difference between Golden and Labrador

Do you know what the difference is between Golden and Labrador? Playful, big, and physically very similar, it’s no wonder that many people end up confusing the breeds.

Golden Retriever and Labrador are among the most sought-after dog breeds in the world – and also by Brazilians – and, really, it’s hard not to fall in love with these dogs.

But if you’re one of those who have difficulty telling them apart, see now all the similarities and differences between Golden and Labrador.

Similarities between Golden Retriever and Labrador

At first glance, indeed, the Golden Retriever and Labrador are quite similar. And this similarity is not for nothing: both breeds are part of the Retriever group, in the classifications of cynology.

Size

Regarding size, both breeds are large, although the standards of the breeds are a little different:

  • Golden Retriever: Males are 56 to 61 cm, and females are 51 to 56 cm.
  • Labrador Retriever: Males are 56 to 57 cm, and females are 54 to 56 cm.

Temperament

Both also have a very sweet expression on their faces. You look at them, and you already know they are gentle and cheerful dogs, which is confirmed by their personalities.

Both Golden and Labrador have a good temperament, are very companionable, lively, are among the top 10 smartest breeds in the world, and adapt to any environment, getting along well with people of all ages and other pets.

Energy

One thing is that both are quite active, especially when puppies. Therefore, they need to spend a lot of energy on walks, runs, and play, and they crave space. Otherwise, they can do some damage to your home.

Both also love water, and it’s common to see a Golden or a Labrador swimming around.

Lifespan

The life expectancy of these breeds is also similar. Both Golden and Labrador usually live around 10 to 13 years. Of course, this is just an average prediction, and your little dog may live longer than that if proper care is taken – like regular visits to the vet.

What are the differences between Golden and Labrador?

As you could see, the similarities are many, and that’s why it’s so common to confuse the two breeds. But then, what are the differences between Golden Retriever and Labrador?

Physical

The main point of distinction is in the coat. While the Golden has straight or slightly wavy fur, longer, the Labrador has short fur close to the body.

The color of the fur also differs. While the Golden is found in shades of gold and cream, the Labrador Retriever can be yellow, brown (or chocolate), and black.

The tail is also quite different. The Labrador’s tail is medium, thicker at the base, tapering to the tip, and covered in short fur. The Golden’s tail is long, with long and straight fur, forming a fringe.

Behavioral

The behavior of the two breeds is very similar. However, the Golden tends to be more attention-seeking from the tutors and less agitated than the Labrador.

Both are so intelligent, gentle, and obedient that they are usually used as guide dogs or even therapy dogs.

Origin of the breeds

One of the main differences between Golden Retriever and Labrador is in the history of how the breeds originated.

The Golden Retriever is a breed that emerged in Scotland in the 19th century. They were widely used as hunting dogs and were crossed with Tweed Water Spaniel, Setters, and Flat-coated Retrievers until they became the breed we know today.

The Labrador Retriever is a more recent breed, its breed club was formed in the early 20th century. It emerged in Canada, on the coast of Newfoundland, alongside the region’s fishermen.

They helped in fishing, being great swimmers and recovering catches that slipped from the nets. “Retriever,” in fact, means “to recover” in English.

Prices

The price of the breeds is one of the points of difference between Labradors and Goldens.

A Labrador puppy with pedigree is usually cheaper, and you can find little ones for up to $2,500.

Golden Retriever puppies of pure breed can range from $1,000 to $7,000.

Our tip is that adopting a pet can be much cooler than buying, and it’s cheaper, of course! There are dogs looking for a new family in shelters and NGOs throughout Brazil.

Now that you know the difference between Golden and Labrador, just choose the breed you prefer and adopt or buy your pet.
